Double award win for Burness Paull at Scottish Legal Awards

It was an exciting evening for Burness Paull at the Scottish Legal Awards, as representatives of the firm picked up two awards at last night’s ceremony that celebrated the best of Scottish legal practice.

Tamar Tammes was awarded the prestigious accolade of Managing Partner of the Year in recognition of her successful strategic leadership of the firm, that has combined strong financial performance with a keen focus on further enhancing the firm’s respectful and inclusive culture.

The evening also saw Burness Paull’s employment team recognised with the award for Employment Law Team of the Year, largely based on the instrumental support they provided clients around the exceptional HR issues posed by the Covid pandemic.

In the last three years, turnover at the firm has grown 34% and a number of initiatives to improve employee health and wellbeing have been implemented, including the appointment of a full-time inclusion and well-being manager and signing up to the Mindful Business Charter – both firsts for a Scottish law firm.

Last year, Burness Paull also became Scotland’s first accredited menopause-friendly employer.

Lorna Jack, chair of the independent judging panel and former CEO of the Law Society of Scotland, said: “Tamar shows all the qualities of an inspiring leader who has led innovation and transformation at Burness Paull. Her great strength seems to be an ability to listen and engage with people across all areas of the business. She is successfully leading a forward-thinking firm which focusses on the health and well being of its staff while delivering a solid operating business. I’m looking forward to presenting this award and recognising the partnership’s many achievements.”

The evening also saw Burness Paull’s employment team recognised with the award for Employment Law Team of the Year, largely based on the instrumental support they provided clients around the exceptional HR issues posed by the Covid pandemic.

The team – which is ranked tier one in both Chambers and Legal500 – hosted employment law round tables, weekly seminars and free webinars for employers across the UK, and provided high quality ad hoc advice at all hours of the day as organisations navigated new and unforeseen challenges during lockdown.

Peter Lawson, chair of Burness Paull, said: “We’re very proud of Tamar, whose well-deserved award reflects her commitment to, and embodiment of, Burness Paull’s human and high-performing culture.

“The award is testament not only to Tamar’s leadership, but the ongoing hard work and dedication of everyone right across the firm to ensure our collective success as we continue to invest in talent for the benefit of our clients, build on our strong culture, and deliver sustainable, profitable growth.”

“Our employment team are shining examples of this, and we are delighted that they too were recognised – underscoring their position as a market leading practice at a Scottish and UK level.

“At a time of such uncertainty for so many, they went above and beyond to provide clients with timely and high-quality advice around critical issues, highlighting the deep expertise, drive and compassion they offer HR and business leaders across a range of sectors, every day.”
