Venue: Simmons & Simmons LLP, CityPoint, 1 Ropemaker Street, London EC2Y 9SS

Speaker: Nigel Spencer, Lead, Spiranti Limited (latterly Global Director of Learning & Development, Reed Smith LLP)

ATTENDANCE AT THIS PSMG EXCLUSIVE ROUND-TABLE DISCUSSION IS FOR DIRECTOR AND PARTNER LEVEL AND BY INVITATION ONLY

At this roundtable we will discuss the following questions and consider some approaches which have helped firms to find solutions to these challenges.

  • How can one create such cultures focused on future possibility when there is the ongoing pressure to deliver in the ‘here and now’ for clients, meaning that finding time for exploring further ahead is difficult to find?
  • What can one do to encourage the adoption of an entrepreneurial mind-set of ‘try – fail – learn – adapt’, given that risk aversion is a commonly-found trait in professionals?
  • How does one reward experimentation, when metrics in an organisation are often set up to emphasise ‘production’?
  • Which approaches will build the firm’s brand for innovation, aiding client – and talent – attraction and retention as a differentiator in the market?

Nigel Spencer led learning & development functions in two global law firms for over 13 years, creating a number of award-winning, innovative leadership development programmes, both for the firms and their clients. Amongst a number of strategic organisational development initiatives, Nigel was also part of a team which built the first London-based innovation hub in a global law firm.

An accredited executive coach, Nigel carries out practice-based research on systemic change, the effectiveness of learning in the workplace, and the link between learning and business strategy. He is a Board member of different professional bodies and also has served as Trustee on Boards of Higher Education Research Institutes and other educational charities.
